Shropshire County Priory Group

The Priory of England and the Islands is one of eleven international Priories of the Order of St John, and our work of providing First Aid Training and Services is carried out on our behalf by our subsidiary St John Ambulance, England's premier first aid charity.

Following a period of limited activity and the appointment of a new Chair the Shropshire County Priory Group (CPG) has gone through a period of revival during the past 12 months and now once again actively represents the Order of St John within the County.

During 2015 the new CPG Chair David Davies and Selena Graham, County President, set about reforming the group and the new composition is a joint venture with St John Ambulance Unit Presidents.

They see the role of President and CPG members having significant overlap, particularly in the areas of fund raising, publicity and awards, and as a result now hold innovative joint CPG/Presidents meetings.

The aim last year was to get the group fully functioning again and in November 2015 the group hosted the first County of Shropshire Order of St John Award for Organ Donation Ceremony. This unique Award is a posthumous award presented to people who have given the amazing gift of life to others through organ donation.

Our second aim was to get the Order of St John Honours and Awards Committee functioning so that formal recognition could be given to nominees who had made an exceptional contribution to the work of St John. This aim has been achieved and the Committee we are now in a position to submit a number of nominations.

There is now a St John Ambulance President in virtually all St John Ambulance Units in Shropshire coming from a wide and varied range of backgrounds.

Our Aims for 2016 include increasing publicity to help with recruitment and fundraising and to hold a second Order of St John Award for Organ Donation Ceremony in the Autumn.

Shropshire County Priory Group (CPG) undertakes the important work of the Priory at a county level and has a wide range of important responsibilities including:

  • Being local ambassadors for St John
  • Working closely with Her Majesty’s Lord-Lieutenant or their representatives
  • Developing strong positive relationships with key local community leaders
